Grades 9-12 Mathematics Activities

Before: Track the path of the hurricane by using the coordinates of latitude and longitude. Use colored pens, stickers, or pins to mark the path. Using the scale on your map, determine the number of miles the hurricane must travel before making landfall in Florida. The probable path of the hurricane falls within a cone. Is Miami currently in the projected path of the storm? When looking at the cone, is Miami to the east or west of the center of the projected path?
During: If five gallons of gasoline will run a generator for approximately six hours, and bigger appliances like refrigerators, freezers, washers, and dryers use five times as much generator time as each small appliance (microwave ovens, televisions, etc.), develop a plan for the use of the generator that will maximize its effectiveness. In the plan, include the time of day and amount of time each appliance will run.
After: Hurricanes cause millions of dollars in damages each year. Create a bar or picture graph to show the costs of hurricane damage over the decades. Data is provided below. (Data source: USA Today)

1920s $2 billion
1930s $4 billion
1940s $4 billion
1950s $11 billion
1960s $17 billion
1970s $17 billion
1980s $15 billion
