Pre-K-2 Mathematics Activities

Before: Draw a picture of the front of your house and show all the windows that need to be boarded up or protected from the hurricane. How many windows are there on the front of your house? If you were to put a big wooden panel on each of your front windows, and each panel needed 4 big nails, how many nails would you need? Now, count all the windows in your house that need to be boarded up to protect your home. If each wooden panel needs 4 nails, how many nails would you need to put up all the panels in your house?
During: Look out of your front window after the storm has passed or go outside with your parents. Have some big trees fallen in your yard? Count the fallen trees in your yard. Now count the fallen trees on your block. On your block, which is greater- the number of fallen trees or the number of trees still standing? With your parents help, draw a graph showing how many trees fell in your yard. First, draw a straight line on a piece of paper. On the line, write the numbers 1-10. Using a crayon, color the line to show the number of trees that fell in your yard.
After: How long did you have to stay indoors when the hurricane passed through your neighborhood? Count the hours. Is that time longer or shorter than the length of a school day? Draw the face of a clock. With your parents help, draw in the hands of the clock to show the time the hurricane began. Draw another clock. Now, draw in the hands of the clock to show the time the hurricane ended. Did you lose electricity in your house? If so, how many hours was the electricity off? Which took longer – the time it took for the hurricane to pass through or the time it took to get the electricity back on?
