Before: |
Draw a simple map of your block. Label each building as a business, house, apartment or condominium. Create a key for the map. (A key tells you what the symbols on the map mean.) Look at the businesses, homes, condominiums and apartments in your neighborhood to determine which ones seem to be safe places to be in a hurricane. In a short paragraph, indicate what makes a house, apartment or condominium safe. |
During: |
Listen to the television news or radio during the storm. What groups in the community are working bravely during the storm to keep our community safe? Write a thank you letter to one of the groups that worked during the storm. Include in your letter the ways that you will also help your family and neighbors after the hurricane passes. |
After: |
After looking out of your window at any damaged trees, power lines, and houses, draw a map of the best route to leave your neighborhood after the hurricane. Give the map a title and key. Color your route. Discuss the route with your parents to see if they agree to your suggested evacuation route. |
