Grades 6-8 Social Studies Activities

Before: List the various public and private agencies and support groups that are seen making hurricane preparations in your community prior to the storm; e.g., power company employees, tree trimmers, trash collectors, police officers. Write a short description of what each group or agency did in your neighborhood prior to the hurricane. Predict the effectiveness of each preventative action taken prior to the storm.
During: Listen to radio and television coverage during the hurricane and make a list of suggestions on how the media could improve its service to the community. Use the list to develop a letter on improving services that you will send to radio and television stations after the hurricane passes.
After: Write a letter to the city or county manager about how your community could be better prepared for future hurricanes. Use examples from the predictions you made earlier about your neighborhood’s preparedness to make your points in the letter.
