Grades 9-12 Social Studies Activities

Before: Listen to various television and radio stations to determine which station(s) seem to have the most useful coverage of the approaching hurricane. Write an open letter to the editor outlining the specific strengths in the news reporting and hurricane coverage.
During: Given your experience during the hurricane, develop a written action plan for your family that is designed to make hurricane preparations more effective for future storms.
After: Assess the quality of support provided by various public and private groups in hurricane recovery; e.g., Florida Power and Light, local government, water department, debris clean up. Determine which group, in your opinion, had the best and worst performance, and then write a letter of commendation and a letter with recommendations to each group’s leadership.
