Before: What is the name of the hurricane that is approaching?  How did the storm get its name?  If you could re-name the storm, what would you name it? Five of the storms for 2017 are named Jose, Arlene, Cindy, Whitney, and Katia.  With your parents help, place these 5 names in alphabetical order.
PARENTS:Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. The original name lists featured only women's names. In 1979, men's names were introduced and they alternate with the women's names. The hurricane names for 2017 are: Arelene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rinal, Sean, Tammy, Vince, and Whitney.
During: Gather the family and walk from room to room in the home.  Discuss the hurricane preparations that can be observed in the various rooms. Have each family member draw a picture illustrating one important preparation that was made. Paste or tape all the pictures drawn by the family together to create a placemat or “quilt” (depending on family size).
After: Hold a family gathering to discuss the effects of the hurricane and add more pictures to the "quilt" or placemat. Place a happy face on any of the pictures that illustrate the preparations that worked the best. Place a sad face on any of the pictures of the preparations that need to be improved the next time a hurricane approaches. Save the "quilt" or placemat to remind family members about the preparations that must be made prior to the next storm.
