Pre-K-2 Social Studies Activities

Before: With your parents help, locate a hurricane tracking map or a map from the newspaper and discuss the following terms: map (a picture of where places are), ocean (a large body of salt water), gulf (a body of ocean water that is partly surrounded by land) and direction (the way something is moving - north, south, east or west). Look at the path of the approaching hurricane. In what direction is it moving? In what ocean or gulf is the hurricane located? If the hurricane misses South Florida, where might it go?
During: Describe what happens in and around your house during the hurricane. Discuss the sights and sounds you hear during the storm. Have you ever heard such strong sounds before? What other kinds of storms can be as strong as a hurricane? Discuss the importance of preparation and safety during a hurricane.
After: Listen to the television or radio during the storm. What kind of information are the reporters providing to help listeners? With your parents help, make a list of the community groups that are working during the storm to make the community safe. Draw a picture of the different groups in the community who work bravely during the storm to keep our community safe. Make a thank you card to send to one of the community agencies to show your appreciation for their help.
